G. S. Sachdev (Gurbachan Singh Sachdev) (1935-2018) passed away - In his memory his second LP released in India in 1976
This morning I received the sad news that G.S. Sachdev has passed away from my dear blogger friend Richard at: Flat, Black and Classical: Indian Classical Music on Vinyl and Cassette. May he rest in peace.
Gurbachan Singh Sachdev was a well-known Indian performer of the Bansuri (Bamboo Flute). He was initially a protege of Vijay Raghav Rao, with whom he studied for twelve years intensively. He then continued his studies with Ravi Shankar and later with Ali Akbar Khan. He holds a degree in music from Gandharav Mandal University in Bombay. A big part of his life he spend in the US teaching, giving concerts and recording. I saw him twice in Amsterdam, I guess in the late 1990s or early 2000s. He seemed to be a very gentle and humble man. I only had a short talk with him. He had a very devote public in Holland. I remember that I was surprised that he was so well-known in Holland. Probably from previous concert tours.

Dhruba Ghosh (1957-2017) - The great Sarangi master passed away on 10th of july - In his memory a concert in Brussels in 2001
Only yesterday we received the very sad news that the great Sarangi master passed away already on 10th of july. May he rest in peace. We met him many many times and knew him not only as a great Sarangi player, indeed the greatest of his generation, whose concerts were always very touching and full of surprises, but also as an extremely lovely and lovable person, always gentle and kind. This is indeed a great and very sad loss.
This january we posted three LPs and cassettes with him: his very first solo recording, an LP where he accompanies his father and brother (both Tabla masters) and an LP by singer Dinkar Kaikini, one of Dhrubas teachers, with his Sarangi accompaniment. See here.

Three Illustrious Brothers: Pandit Maniram (1920-1985), Pandit Pratap Narayan (1918-2002) & Pandit Jasraj (born 1930) - LP published in India in 1976
This is an LP which I was very fond of for a number of years when I bought it in Southall near London in the second half of the 1970. I liked very much the soaring voice of Pandit Maniram. And also the accompanists: the wonderful Sultan Khan on Sarangi and the outstanding Nizamuddin Khan on Tabla. There was a time when I was so fond of the playing of Ustad Nizamuddin Khan that I bought every LP on which he played, regardless of the main musician.

Yunus Hussain Khan (1927-1991) - Doyen of Agra Gharana - In Concert - Double Cassette published in India in 1992
After the two double CDs by the great Vilayat Hussain Khan here a double cassette by his son.
"Born on November 15th 1927 at Agra, Yunus Hussain Khan, the eleventh direct
descendent of the Agra gharana, received intensive training from an early age
from his illustrious father the late Ustad Vilayat Hussain Khan. He also studied
under other great masters like the Late Ustad Faiyaz Khan and his maternal
uncle, Ustad Azmat Hussain Khan of Atrauli. His innate talent for music coupled
with the rigorous training he received gave him full command over the great
heritage of the Agra Gharana.
Possessed with a rich voice and superb musicianship, he sang the Agra
gayakee in his own individual style: varied in music, rich in ideas and full of
colour. He was prominent in the Hindustani Musical scene for more than five
decades and gave numerous recitals both in India and abroad.
Khan Saheb was not only a sensitive vocalist but also noted for his
versatility as an erudite scholar, gifted composer and teacher of music. He was
a Professor of Music at University of Delhi, Viswa Bharti University of
Shantiniketan and was also a guru at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy at
Kolkata. During 1985-86, he taught at the University of Washington in the
Ethnomusicology Programme and also gave lectures and demonstrations in the
University of British Culombia, Canada. During his association with Delhi
University, he was Director, Composer and Conductor of Sargam Choir, Delhi Youth
Choral Group and his own Darpan Choir.
Associated with the All India Radio between 1962 and 1964 as Music
Composer, he was a composer of distinction, and has left as a legacy, a valuable
collection of his compositions under the nom-de-plume “Darpan” and several
ragas, like Sujani malhar, Devyani, Nat Deepak, Husaini Bhairav, Nohar Todi,
Ahiri Bihag, Lalita Sohini, Jogwanti etc.
As a musicologist, he had to his credit many articles, books and papers on
music. He has been recorded by Sangeet Natak Akademi and Unesco and has featured
on European documentary films.
Yunus Hussain Khan died of a heart attack on September 29,1991, in New
Delhi."
