Vilayat Khan - Music of India - Vol. 2 - French edition of EALP 1259 (1961)

Here we offer a French edition of the very first LP by Vilayat Khan for The Gramophone Company of India, released in India in 1961. This French edition is probably from mid or end of the 1960s. The advantage of the French editions is that they don't have the surface noise which almost all Indian pressings have.
In 2011 we posted the volume 3 of this French series, also by Ustad Vilayat Khan. And also in 2011 volume 5 by the Senior Dagar Brothers.

In 2017 we posted the companion LP to this one. These two LPs each contain recordings from two different recording sessions with two different Tabla accompanists. See here for further information.

This is our 18th post by Vilayat Khan.

Vilayat Khan - Monumental Music of Sitar Nawaz Ustad Vilayat Khan assisted by Shujat Khan on Surbahar - Cassette released in India in 1989

Here a quite rare cassette by Ustad Vilayat Khan, together with his son Shujaat Khan on Surbahar. It was never republished on CD.
There exists another recording of the same Raga by both artists, done in 1993 live in London. It was released by Navras in 1995 on CD and DVD.

Vilayat Khan - Sitar Samrat - Raga Gawoti - Cassette released in India in 1986

Here another very beautiful cassette by Ustad Vilayat Khan. The second side was republished on a compilation CD: Aftaab-e-Sitar (1988). The complete recording was on CD 4 of a box of five CDs: The Best of Ustad Vilayat Khan Ever (2012).

Vilayat Khan - Sandhi Prakash - Raga Purvi - Cassette released in India in 1991

Here a very beautiful, but little known recording by the exquisite Ustad Vilayat Khan. As far as I know the recording was only once rereleased on CD: on CD 2 of a compilation box of three CDs called "The Great Heritage".

Vilayat Khan - The Genius of Vilayat Khan - LP published in India in 1962

Here our last LP - for now - by the great Vilayat Khan. The two Ragas are from the same recording sessions as the ones on the LP with Tilak Kamod and Bhairavi which was released in 1961. In effect it seems that there were two recording sessions, one with Mohammad Ahmad on Tabla and the other with Santa Prasad on Tabla. The Ahir Bhairav here and the Tilak Kamod on the LP from 1961 are with Mohammad Ahmad and the Khamaj on our LP here and the Bhairavi on the LP from 1961 are with Santa Prasad.

These two LPs are amongst the very first LPs of classical Indian music published by the Gramophone Company of India. The EALP series started with the number 1251 (Ravi Shankar & Ali Akbar Khan) in 1960.

Vilayat Khan - Music of India - Vilayat Khan - No. 2 - LP published in Great Britain in 1963

The first volume from 1962 we had posted in 2016. See here. On the back Imrat Khan is also mentioned as playing the Surbahar. But this was true only for the first volume.

Vilayat Khan - Music from India Series 11 - LP published in England in 1969

We continue now our series of LPs by the great Vilayat Khan. Here we post the English edition of an LP which was released also the same year in India, but with a different cover:

The reason why we choose the English edition, though we have the Indian edition in our collection, is that English pressings are of better quality.
This English edition we received from LF from Scotland. Many thanks to him for sharing so generously.

Vilayat Khan & Bismillah Khan - Duets - LP released in Great Britain in 1967

This was one of the most popular LPs of classical Indian music in the 1960s and 1970. It is very surprising that it never was released on CD. Perhaps the master tape got lost.
This was one of my first LPs of Raga music. The first one was the legendary "Pakistani Soul Session" with the great Sarangi master Ustad Nathu Khan (see here), the second the very beautiful LP "North Indian Master of the Sarod" by Ali Akbar Khan (see here). One or two years later (1969 or 1970) I bought in Holland two LPs: my very first Ravi Shankar (see here) and the one posted here.

Vilayat Khan - The Supreme Genius of Ustad Vilayat Khan - LP released in India in 1968

Here one of the most legendary LPs of Vilayat Khan. It was later also released on CD, but unfortunately it seems that they lost the master tape and took a defective recording as the source for the CD. I checked copies from several generations of the CD. They all had the same defect.
So the best is to have the original LP. I bought this one in Southall near London in the mid 1970s.

Vilayat Khan - Ameer Khusrau - A Tribute by Ustad Vilayat Khan - LP published in India in 1975

Here we present a wonderful LP by the great Ustad Vilayat Khan. It is interesting to compare his Raga Saazgiri, a creation by Ameer Khusrau, with the one performed the same year by another outstanding Sitar player, Ustad Mohammad Sharif Khan Poonchwale of Pakistan, also performed as a tribute to Hazrat Amir Khusrau. See here.
We will post in the next couple of weeks about four more LPs by Ustad Vilayat Khan.
